When Do I Get My Pet Immunized?

If you have a dog or cat, you want to get them immunized as soon as they turn eight weeks old. However, if you have recently adopted a pet, especially strays, you want to bring them to the vet at El Paso Animal Clinic as soon as possible. We can test them for infection and provide vaccinations as needed to ensure their health and wellness. If your pet has been microchipped we may be able to access their pet records from the manufacturer’s database to determine when and if they have been immunized.

What is National Immunization Awareness Month?

Every August the National Public Health Information Coalition (NPHIC) promotes National Immunization Awareness Month. While we often remember to get our children immunized, it is just as important to immunize our pets. Pet immunizations protect animals from contracting dangerous and deadly diseases including parvovirus, feline herpes, and Lyme disease. By protecting your pet against these diseases using vaccinations, you may also be protecting your human family from contracting certain diseases.

What are the Essential Vaccinations for Pets?

For dogs and cats the most common vaccines are the distemper shot and rabies vaccine. In addition to these core vaccines you may want to get your pet immunized with noncore vaccines. These include vaccines for Lyme, parainfluenza, Bordetella, and FeLV.  According to Kansas State University, certain vaccinations are not recommended for pets, including coronavirus for dogs and FIP for cats. If you aren’t sure about which vaccines are necessary, we are here to help. Talk to your vet in Derby, KS to determine which vaccines are best suited for your pet based on their lifestyle, environment, and exposure to other pets.
