The Benefits of Walking Your Dog from Our Derby Veterinarians
If your dog is like most others of his species, the suggestion of going out for a walk elicits an enthusiastic response. By their natures, dogs are creatures that are built to move around outdoors. They have a natural migrating instinct and, in the wild, will travel long distances with their pack, in search of food. Living indoors with busy families can produce significant stress on dogs. A long walk, at least twice each day can help your dog to work off tension, sniff the world around him, enjoy the fresh air and think more interesting canine thoughts.
Benefits of Walking For Your Dog
Walking not only exercises your dog’s body; it also stimulates his or her brain, reduces stress from modern living, helping to manage weight and promoting healthy immune system function. Your veterinarian can advise you on the right amount of walking for your individual dog’s breed.
Caring For Your Dog on Walks
Ideally, your dog should always be on a leash when outdoors. If you are close to a wooded area, you may be able to let him or her have a good run off the leash for a short period of time, but for most walks in the neighborhood or around town, your pet should be on a sturdy leash attached to a comfortable collar. For easy management, every dog should be trained for walking on a leash from puppyhood. If necessary, you can attend dog training classes to teach your dog to walk quietly and reliably on a leash, regardless of his size or strength.
Keep in mind, your dog’s paws can be injured by glass or debris on sidewalks, and they can pick up burrs in the woods. In winter, paws can also be burned by road salt. Regularly check your dog’s paws after a walk and wipe off dirt and road salt.
