Flea and Tick Vaccines Available for Dogs and Cats in Derby, KS

Although no flea or tick "vaccine" exists, your Derby veterinarian offers effective flea and tick preventives that can keep your pet parasite free throughout the worst months for parasites-spring and summer. Vaccines for pets only prevent certain viral or bacterial diseases from making your pet sick. However, there is a vaccine against tick-borne Lyme disease that is available for dogs and cats.

Injectable and Oral Flea and Tick Preventives

Some flea preventives contain a safe and effective insect development inhibitor that stops fleas from maturing. However, they don't kill fleas and usually accompany administration of a flea adulticide (preventive that does kill adult fleas). Insect development inhibitors are available as once-a-month tablets for dogs and injectable for cats (once every six months). A few flea preventives also stop heartworm infection and treat roundworm, whipworm and hookworm infections.

Topical for Fleas and Ticks

Once-a-month topicals are usually applied as single drops to the back of an animal's neck in between their shoulder blades. Easy to use and long-lasting, FDA-regulated flea and tick topicals contain ingredients deadly to parasites, such as permethrin, imidacloprid, and fipronil. Permethrin paralyzes and kills insects almost immediately if they eat or touch the medication. However, cats should never be exposed to flea or tick preventives containing permethrin due to their heightened sensitivity to this insecticide.

Imidacloprid is a flea preventive that can be used on dogs and cats. Designed to mimic the effects of nicotine (which is toxic to most insects), imidacloprid has been FDA approved in the U.S. since the early 1990s.

Fipronil is found in topical pet flea products and is safe for use on both dogs and cats. Fleas and other insects eating or coming in contact with fipronil suffer immediate disruption of their nervous system similar to how permethrin affects insects.

Tick and Flea Dips

Giving pet’s flea and/or tick dips before using oral or topical preventives is recommended to make it easier for the preventive to work more effectively. Dips are pet-friendly insecticides diluted with water and sponged over an animal's fur until the dip has thoroughly saturated their skin. Not meant to be rinsed off like shampoos, flea/tick dips are strong and should not be used on dogs and cats less than four months old or nursing/pregnant pets.
